A maximum-bet clause is short, easy to miss and unusually unforgiving. It is the term most often cited when a bonus and its winnings are removed.

A bonus is an exchange: the operator adds funds or free play to your balance, and in return you accept an obligation to stake a defined amount, within a defined window, under a defined set of restrictions. The headline describes the first half of that exchange. The clause list describes the second half. Both halves are the offer.
Because the obligation is measured in stakes rather than in outcomes, the size of the obligation does not shrink when you lose and does not clear when you win. It is a distance to be covered. That is why the single most useful habit in this entire subject is arithmetic done before claiming: take the bonus, apply the multiplier, and look at the resulting figure as a number you either accept or decline.
