The phrases worth stopping on
Bonus terms are written in a small vocabulary that repeats across the industry. Learning roughly ten phrases means a terms page can be scanned in a couple of minutes instead of read end to end with no plan.

- Wagering requirement
- The total stake that must pass through the account before bonus-derived funds can be withdrawn, expressed as a multiple of a base amount.
- Playthrough
- A synonym for wagering requirement. The base it applies to is stated separately and is the detail that changes the obligation most.
- Maximum bet
- A ceiling on the stake per bet or round while a bonus is active. Breaching it is typically treated as a term violation rather than a judgement call.
- Game weighting
- The percentage of each stake that counts towards turnover, applied per game category. Zero means the category is inert for bonus purposes.
- Excluded titles
- Named games or providers that do not contribute to turnover, or are prohibited entirely while a bonus is active.
- Validity period
- The window in which the whole obligation must be completed. It usually begins at credit or at first stake, and it is stated.
- Convertible cap
- A limit on how much bonus-derived balance can become withdrawable, even after the turnover is fully cleared.
- Cash-first
- A rule that uses your own deposited funds before bonus funds, which changes how a session feels and how exposure accumulates.
- Bonus abuse
- A broad category covering low-risk staking patterns, hedging, or two-sided positions taken to convert a bonus without exposure. It is usually a discretionary term.
- Forfeiture
- The removal of the bonus and related winnings, on expiry, on a breach, or on a withdrawal request made before turnover is complete.
Two flags that deserve their own heading
The first is any clause whose enforcement depends on the operator's own assessment rather than a stated number: abuse clauses, "irregular play", or language about strategies deemed unacceptable. These are not necessarily improper, but they mean the outcome is not fully determined by arithmetic you can do in advance. Weigh that openly against the size of the bonus.
The second is a cap on what bonus play can convert into, placed alongside a large multiplier. Both clauses are legitimate; together they define an arrangement where the effort required is fixed by the multiplier while the reward is capped by the convertible limit. When they appear together, the terms are effectively telling you the answer to the question you were about to work out.
None of these phrases is a mark of dishonesty on its own. Standard terms are standard for ordinary commercial reasons. The point of the glossary is only this: the phrases tell you where the decision is, so you can spend your attention there rather than on the parts of the page the marketing led you to read.
